Today the Westboro Baptists came to BU to protest. Apparently a rabbi here said God is a woman so of course they had to drop by our campus during their Boston tour today and tell us all to repent or go to hell (without passing go or collecting our $200). And reminding us all there's no freak like a Jesus freak.

Scariest handful of protesters I've ever seen, hands down. They had a kid -like a ten year old kid- marching around in the cold with a sign that read "Your rabbi is a whore" on one side and "God hates Jews" on the other.

My favorite sign on the sign on the opposition's side was "IMA LETCHU FINISH BUT FRED PHELPS IS THE STUPIDEST MUTHAFUCKA OF ALL TIME." There was another good one that said "GOD HATES SHRIMP."

Of course all this had to go down on World AIDS Day, crazy right wingers have the worst timing. Especially since this years AIDS Day theme is respect and protect. Le sigh.

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?

As much as I enjoy standing up for what I believe in and shoving my semi-obnoxious liberalism in other people's faces, if I popped a blood vessel every time somebody I know made a racist or homophobic remark that's all I'd ever do (and it would probably result in my demise). I'm queer, I'm mulatto and my friends and relatives know how I feel about their bullshit. There are also these things called "jokes", some people make them.

But a stranger making racist and homophobic remarks is a whole different ballgame.
